Ukraine and Poland is united not only by thousand years of good neighborhood relations and cooperation but also by the present and the future.

 

This was stressed by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn during his meeting with the President of the Republic of Poland Bronislav Komorovski on Thursday.

 

Ukraine highly appreciates the current visit of the President of the Republic of Poland. The Head of the Parliament was satisfied with the fact that during this visit the Memorial to the victims of totalitarian repression will be opened on the territory of National Historical Memorial Reserve "Bykivnyanski graves".

 

"I am convinced that we should well know and remember our past to confidently face the future," the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada said.

 

V.Lytvyn noted that the dialogue between our countries continues developing. He said that inter parliamentary cooperation at all levels is an important part of this process. 

 

The Head of the Parliament expressed confidence that Ukrainian-Polish relations of strategic character will continue developing.

 

The President of the Republic of Poland said that his country supports eurointegrational aspirations of Ukraine and that our country has shown "great progress" in this sphere. According to him, Ukraine continues reforms that bring us closer to the democratic standards.

 

 "It is necessary to overcome difficulties on the way to signing the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union," B.Komorovski said. He noted also that democratic parliamentary elections will promote the signing and ratification of this document.

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada expressed conviction that parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be democratic. "I do not like suggestions that elections will a priori be undemocratic," he said. V.Lytvyn mentioned that the law on elections is obligatory for all the parties of the electoral process.

 

V.Lytvyn informed that, in the framework of reforming legal system, the Parliament has adopted the law to amend several legislative acts of Ukraine to improve operation of public prosecution.
